Question: What made you get involved with horses?
I’ve been involved with horses my entire life. As a boy living on the family farm and ranch, everything we did, we had to use horses. The hay was cut, raked and hauled in large wagons using teams of horses. As a teenager, I began calf roping, later I entered rodeos as a roper. World War II started, and I went in the service. After I was discharged, I went straight back to the ranch. Our neighbor was Warren Shoemaker, a Quarter Horse breeder who was later inducted into the American Quarter Horse Association Hall of Fame. I was always around Warren and admiring his horses. Warren encouraged me to get in the horse business. In 2010, AQHA awarded me the Legacy Award. This makes 57 years that I have registered Quarter Horse foals with AQHA. This is something that I’ve had success with and enjoy doing.
Question: What makes your horse special to you?
Question: Hobbies and Interests:
The ranch and farm do not allow me to have any hobbies. I am a workaholic, and I stay busy on the ranch. I enjoy watching any type of horse event. We live on the ranch; it is 20 miles to the closest town and two hours to a big city. www.hashkniferanch.net
Question: What Is your response to winning this award?
I’m planning to introduce Metallic Gun into our breeding program. Our present stallion, A Dandy Rawhide, has been doing an excellent job for us, and I’m certainly not trying to replace him. With the size and ability of Metallic Gun, we feel he will fit right into our program. Metallic Gun will be standing at Armstrong Equine Service under the management of Dr. Joe B. Armstrong. armstrongequine.com/stallions/
